Why do people throw pairs of shoes into trees, or on power lines?

I heard it has something to do with gangs, or drugs, but I don%26#039;t know. What%26#039;s the deal?

Why do people throw pairs of shoes into trees, or on power lines?
It is a gang thing. It%26#039;s supposed to represent a location where someone was killed.
Reply:If there are a pair of shoes slung over a telephone wire, in Britain, it shows that that area is already occupied by a person, or people, dealing drugs.

It%26#039;s to ward off competition.

Yeah, sometimes if an area has been claimed, the shoes are used to mark the spot of the confrontation, even where someone was killed.
Reply:it is a warning device... telling all middle class people that they should avoid that neighborhood (especially past dark) if at all possible.

it%26#039;s just ghetto that%26#039;s all it is. graffiti, trash in the gutters, and shoes of the phone/power lines.
Reply:Kids did that when I was young about 30 years ago. At that time it was just mischief...perhaps wrapping your old Nikes around a power line means something different these days.
Reply:i aint never heard that gang one but meh depends where you live
